At the SNE Battery Day 2024 expo in Seoul, South Korea, Samsung presented its latest advancements in battery technology. Over the past six months, the company has been conducting tests of its pilot solid-state battery line with electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, who have given positive feedback. If these tests continue to be successful, Samsung anticipates beginning mass production of all-solid-state batteries by 2027.
The new batteries have impressive specifications, including a lifespan of around 20 years, a charging time of only 9 minutes, and the ability to power EVs for up to 600 miles on a single charge. These solid-state batteries are preferred by EV manufacturers over traditional lithium-ion batteries due to their smaller size, increased safety, and lighter weight, achieved by replacing liquid components with solid ones.
Additionally, the energy density of these batteries is 500 Wh/kg, nearly double that of traditional EV batteries, which translates to a greater driving range.
Despite their advantages, the production of these batteries is currently expensive, limiting their initial use to premium EV models. Samsung plans to offer high-nickel NCS products to the premium segment as well. For more affordable EVs, Samsung is developing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and cobalt-free batteries, and a dry electrode production method to reduce costs.
Samsung aims to produce batteries that can be rapidly charged in 9 minutes by 2026, matching the price points of popular and entry-level EV segments.
However, Samsung faces significant competition in the battery market. Chinese manufacturers already have advanced battery packs with semi-solid electrolytes that can power EVs for up to 650 miles on a single charge.
The 9-minute charge claim by Samsung likely refers to charging from 10-20% to 80%, not from 0 to 100%, as charging speeds decrease significantly after 80% to protect the battery. Competitors are already offering faster charging speeds and developing batteries with similar or longer lifespans.
While Samsung’s new battery technologies show promise and have received positive feedback from initial testing, the company is up against stiff competition. Rival companies are already offering advanced battery solutions with impressive specifications.
Samsung’s focus on solid-state batteries for premium EVs and its efforts to develop cost-effective solutions for affordable EVs highlight its strategic approach to gaining a foothold in the competitive battery market.
