As the U.S. approaches a critical election, Google is rolling out new measures to ensure users receive reliable information. Building on previous initiatives, the company is adding additional safeguards across YouTube, Search, Google Play, and its AI products to enhance election-related accuracy and security.
YouTube will feature information panels for federal election candidates, providing users with essential details such as political party affiliation and links to more information on Google Search. These panels will be similar to those found for prominent figures online. As Election Day, November 5, approaches, YouTube’s homepage will also display reminders about where and how to vote.
Google Search will include aggregated voter registration resources from state election offices, sourced through a partnership with Democracy Works, a nonpartisan nonprofit. This effort aims to provide users with comprehensive voter registration information, helping them access essential voting resources.
The Google Play Store will add a badge to identify apps from official government agencies. This badge will be given to applications that meet specific criteria for communicating government information, making it easier for users to recognize trusted sources.
For generative AI, Google is expanding its election-related restrictions by introducing several new measures. These include disclosures for AI-generated ads, content labels for AI-created material, and digital watermarking for AI-generated text, audio, images, and video. These safeguards will apply across various AI tools, including Search AI Overviews and YouTube AI-generated summaries.
