The second-generation AirPods Pro are enhancing their hearing health capabilities with the upcoming iOS 18 update, which introduces three new features: Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, and Hearing Protection. These features represent Apple’s comprehensive approach to hearing health, focusing on awareness, assistance, and prevention.
The cornerstone of this update is the Hearing Test, a clinically validated tool that allows users to assess their hearing ability using their AirPods Pro and iPhone, eliminating the need for a traditional audiology booth.
Apple’s Hearing Test mirrors the classic hearing tests administered by audiologists but provides a modern, convenient alternative. Instead of visiting a clinic, users can conduct the test in a quiet environment using their AirPods Pro. The process involves ensuring a proper fit for the earbuds, checking the surrounding noise level, and then listening to tones with active noise cancellation enabled.
Users tap their iPhone screen when they hear sounds in either ear, and the test results are designed to be both quick and accurate, thanks to extensive real-world data and simulations used in its development.
Upon completing the Hearing Test, users receive immediate feedback on their hearing ability, with details on any hearing loss detected in each ear. If only minimal hearing loss is present, the software may suggest adjustments to audio settings for better listening experiences.
For those with mild to moderate hearing loss, the test might recommend utilizing the Hearing Aid feature to enhance daily auditory experiences. This feature is specifically tailored to provide help in improving sound clarity across various audio sources.
A demonstration of the Hearing Test showed that it is straightforward and efficient, with a typical completion time of around five minutes. Results from the test are saved in the Health app, enabling users to track changes over time and access relevant hearing health information.
Users can retake the test as frequently as needed, and if severe hearing loss is detected, the software will advise consulting an audiologist for further evaluation.
In addition to the Hearing Test, the Hearing Aid feature is a novel, FDA-submitted solution designed to assist users with mild to moderate hearing loss. It enhances specific sound frequencies to improve clarity in conversations, environmental sounds, and media playback.
This feature allows users to adjust amplification, balance, and tone settings as needed, providing a customizable hearing aid experience directly through the AirPods Pro. Both Hearing Aid and Hearing Test are expected to be available with the iOS 18 update this fall, pending FDA approval.
