In 2017, Volkswagen introduced the ID Buzz concept, marking the return of the beloved VW bus as an electric vehicle (EV). This announcement sparked considerable excitement, particularly among fans of the classic model, which has long been associated with free-spirited road trips and the counterculture of the 1960s. As we move into 2024, the ID Buzz is finally set to make its debut in the U.S. market, following a successful run in Europe for nearly two years.

The anticipated price for the ID Buzz is around $60,000, which may exceed some consumers’ expectations. Additionally, its estimated range of approximately 230 miles falls short when compared to many family vehicles that can achieve over 300 miles on a single charge. While initial enthusiasm has waned somewhat, a recent test drive indicates that the ID Buzz still manages to evoke some of the excitement felt at the time of its announcement.

The vehicle boasts EPA-rated ranges of 234 miles for the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) model and 231 miles for the all-wheel-drive (AWD) version. These figures are modest for an electric van. During a test drive across various terrains, the RWD model averaged about 2.8 miles per kilowatt-hour, resulting in a real-world range of around 240 miles. Although Volkswagen has faced scrutiny in the past for underreporting range figures, the performance metrics suggest that the ID Buzz can meet the practical needs of most drivers.

The AWD version performed slightly better, achieving 3.0 miles per kWh, which translates to an estimated range of 258 miles during highway driving. This performance indicates that the range could be even more favorable for city driving. Moreover, the ID Buzz’s rapid charging capability of up to 200 kW alleviates concerns about its sub-250-mile range, making it well-suited for road trips and outdoor adventures.

In terms of performance, the ID Buzz shows a remarkable improvement over its slower predecessors. The AWD model delivers 335 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about six seconds. While this acceleration may not compete with high-performance EVs, it aligns well with the family-friendly nature of the vehicle. The RWD model, with 282 horsepower, offers a more engaging driving experience, especially on winding roads, though it features a slightly firmer suspension than one might expect for a family vehicle.

A notable feature of the ID Buzz is its regenerative braking system, which allows drivers to switch between different driving modes. However, adjusting these settings requires interaction with the infotainment system, which may not be intuitive for all users. The absence of a one-pedal driving feature, common in many modern electric vehicles, could be viewed as a drawback for some EV enthusiasts.

The ID Buzz’s design pays tribute to the classic microbus, showcasing short overhangs and ample windows. It offers an impressive 146 cubic feet of cargo space, exceeding that of many larger SUVs. The standard seating configuration accommodates seven passengers, and the interior can be arranged to optimize both legroom and cargo capacity. Thoughtful storage solutions and multiple USB-C charging ports highlight the vehicle’s focus on modern family needs.

Volkswagen has made strides in enhancing its infotainment system, which features a large touchscreen and includes ChatGPT integration for voice commands. However, the absence of specific modes designed for outdoor activities may disappoint some potential buyers. Given the interest in such features, there is a possibility that they could be added in future software updates.

Despite its many appealing attributes, the ID Buzz faces challenges related to its pricing and eligibility for EV tax credits. As it is manufactured in Germany, it does not qualify for U.S. tax incentives, although leasing options may provide some buyers with a way to benefit from these credits. Volkswagen recognizes that the ID Buzz serves a niche market but remains confident that demand will persist, particularly for a vehicle that merges nostalgia with practical utility.

While the ID Buzz may not meet every expectation regarding range and pricing, it effectively embodies the spirit of the original VW bus. Its blend of nostalgia, utility, and modern electric vehicle technology makes it a compelling choice for families seeking a spacious and adventurous ride. Whether embarking on road trips or managing daily errands, the ID Buzz promises a unique and enjoyable driving experience.
