Volkswagen Atlas Recall for Airbag Issue Affects Over 307,000 SUVs

Attention Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport owners! If your vehicle was built between October 2020 and June 2024, it may be part of a recent safety recall addressing a potential passenger airbag issue.

The culprit lies within the passenger occupant detection system, which could mistakenly deactivate the front passenger airbag in a collision.

This system, known as Body Sense and linked to the passenger seat heating, might misinterpret signals, leading to the airbag malfunction.

To warn drivers of this problem, affected vehicles will emit a chime, illuminate a warning light, and display a message on the instrument cluster.

Don’t hesitate to schedule a visit with your Volkswagen dealer to address this concern and ensure your SUV’s safety features are functioning properly.

A potential safety issue with the passenger occupant detection system (PODS) has sparked a recall for over 307,000 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs in the United States and Canada.

Volkswagen identified the problem after a significant surge in warranty claims related to the PODS. To rectify this concern, dealerships will replace the faulty sensor mat and wiring harness with improved components that have been integrated into Atlas production since mid-June 2024.

These redesigned parts address the root cause of the malfunction and ensure the airbags function properly. While official notification letters will arrive by mail in mid-August, owners can proactively check Volkswagen’s recall portal using their vehicle’s 17-character VIN to schedule a service appointment and get their Atlas or Atlas Cross Sport repaired sooner.
