The latest image released by the Hubble Space Telescope has shed light on a previously unknown characteristic of lenticular galaxies, namely their “ghostly” appearance. The image showcases NGC 6684, a galaxy located approximately 44 million light-years away in the constellation of Pavo, which presents a stark contrast to spiral galaxies like our own Milky Way. The Hubble program “Every Known Nearby Galaxy” aims to observe every galaxy within 10 megaparsecs (32.6 million light-years) of Earth that has not yet been imaged. Prior to this program, Hubble had already observed approximately 75% of these nearby galaxies, leaving a significant portion of the galaxy census to be completed.
