Chris and Julie Ramsey, a Scottish couple, have accomplished a historic feat by completing an 18,000-mile journey in an electric vehicle (EV) from the North Pole to the South Pole, believed to be a world first. The duo began their adventure 10 months ago, traversing 17 countries in North and South America before arriving at the South Pole. Their remarkable journey pushes the limits of EV technology, aims to promote EV adoption, and demonstrates the environmental benefits of electric vehicles.
The Ramseys goed on this project in their modified Nissan Ariya e-4ORCE EV, equipped with larger tires to tackle challenging terrain. The pair faced extreme temperatures, torrential rain, and strong winds, which tested both the vehicle and their endurance. Chris Ramsey expressed his admiration for the EV’s capabilities, stating, “I’ve always had full confidence in the amazing capabilities of electric vehicles, and I knew our Nissan Ariya would tackle everything thrown at it.” However, he also acknowledged that the journey was more daunting than anticipated.
Julie Ramsey reflected on the incredible experiences they shared during their journey, including the friendships they made and the support they received. The couple utilized regular charging points along the way, with a contingency plan of a 5kW wind turbine or portable solar panels when facilities were unavailable.
This polar expedition is not their first EV adventure. In 2017, they completed the 10,500-mile Mongol Rally in their own Nissan Leaf, becoming the first to accomplish this feat. This experience sparked their interest in EVs and led them to plan their Pole-to-Pole journey. The Ramseys’ ventures aim to generate enthusiasm for EVs and promote their environmental benefits.
After reaching the South Pole, the couple is set to take a break over Christmas before deciding on their next project. It is guaranteed to involve an electric vehicle, as they are passionate about showcasing the capabilities and potential of EVs. Chris and Julie Ramsey’s Pole-to-Pole drive has demonstrated the remarkable potential of EVs to push boundaries and inspire others to adopt sustainable driving practices.
