Social Media App Bluesky Sees Huge Surge in Users After Beta Exit

Bluesky Makes Big Leap Forward with Direct Messaging Feature

In a significant development, social media app Bluesky has gained nearly a million new users just a day after exiting its invitation-only beta phase and opening to everyone. This surge in user base has brought the total number of accounts on the platform to over four million, according to a recent post on Bluesky’s main rival, X (formerly Twitter). The rapid growth of the app can be attributed to its expanded availability, which now allows users to download it for free on their iPhone and Android devices.

Bluesky’s decision to come out of beta and open up its service to a broader audience has shown significant results, with over 850,000 new sign-ups in a single day. This is in addition to the existing user base of over three million accounts, which were slowly built up through invitation codes and a waitlist. The sudden influx of new users has led to a staggering two million posts being created on the platform in just 24 hours.

The rapid growth of Bluesky raises questions about its ability to continue building its user base and attracting users from X, as well as other social media platforms. The app’s decision to make its content viewable to anyone via the web, regardless of whether they have an account, has made it more accessible and attractive to users.

Bluesky’s growth can be attributed to its unique features, which differentiate it from other social media platforms. For instance, the app’s focus on decentralized and community-driven content has drawn users who are unhappy with Elon Musk’s stewardship of X, which has been criticized for its changes to the platform’s algorithm and moderation policies.

Additionally, Bluesky’s open-source nature and decentralized infrastructure have made it an attractive option for users who value their online privacy and freedom. The app’s ability to allow users to run their own servers and maintain control over their data has been a major draw for many users.

In comparison, X’s dominance in the microblogging space has been threatened by the rise of alternative platforms like Threads, launched by Meta in July last year. While Threads has seen significant growth, with over 130 million monthly active users, it still lags behind X’s estimated 368 million monthly users. Bluesky’s ability to attract users from both X and Threads will be crucial to its continued growth and success.

As Bluesky continues to grow and expand its user base, it will be interesting to see how it navigates the competitive terrain of social media. With its unique features and decentralized infrastructure, the app has the potential to attract a significant following and challenge X’s dominance in the microblogging space.
