Boeing Space Takes Significant Step Towards Historic Crewed Test Flight

Boeing Space has made significant progress towards its long-awaited first crewed test flight of the CST-100 Starliner spacecraft, with the recent confirmation of the integrity of the upgraded design of the main parachute system. This crucial development has cleared the way for the Crew Flight Test, which is currently slated for no earlier than April.

The Starliner’s main parachute system plays a critical role in the spacecraft’s descent at the end of a mission, and the upgraded design has been thoroughly tested and validated. According to Boeing Space, the new parachute system has improved soft links, reinforced the main parachute suspension, and strengthened the radial line, making it more robust and reliable.

In preparation for the test flight, the new parachute system has been installed on the Starliner, and Boeing Space has taken to social media to share footage of the recent test, which took place last month. The video shows the parachute system in action, deploying successfully and achieving all test objectives.

The first crewed Starliner mission, currently scheduled for April, will see NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams travel aboard the Boeing Space capsule to the International Space Station (ISS) for a stay of up to two weeks. The pair will work alongside other ISS crew members and then return home in the Starliner for a parachute-assisted landing in the Southwest of the United States.
