Getty Images and PicsArt Partner to Launch a New Era in Generative AI

Adobe’s Firefly AI and Stock image hosting platform had previously dominated the generative AI industry, thanks to its proprietary and “commercially safe” dataset of licensed images. However, Getty Images is now jumping into the game, partnering with PicsArt to build and train a generative AI model based on Getty’s exclusive library of photo and video content. This move is significant, as Getty Images is one of the largest and most respected stock image and video libraries in the world.

The partnership between Getty Images and PicsArt aims to empower creators with high-quality content for use directly within the PicsArt platform. According to Grant Farhall, chief product officer at Getty Images, “This partnership connects Getty Images’ vast creative library with the next generation of marketers and creators, empowering them with high-quality content for use directly within the PicsArt platform. It allows creators to bring their visions to life while maintaining the highest standards of commercial safety.”

The new PicsArt model will be custom-built from the ground up, designed to produce generated images that do not violate copyright regulations. This is a significant step forward in the generative AI industry, which has long struggled with adhering to modern copyright law. Many of today’s largest models are trained on data scraped from the public internet, leading to a proliferation of lawsuits from creators negatively impacted.

The partnership is expected to launch later this year as an API call through PicsArt’s site, although the subscription level required to access the new model has not yet been determined. In comparison, PicsArt’s recently announced Getty Images’ video integration requires a $5-per-month PicsArt Plus membership.

Adobe’s recent struggles with its own user base over its new terms and conditions further highlights the importance of partnering with a reputable content provider like Getty Images. Adobe’s update sparked widespread criticism, with some high-profile users, including director Duncan Jones, speaking out against the move. The company eventually published a blog post clarifying the new terms and conditions, citing the need for improved moderation processes and adherence to responsible innovation.

The PicsArt x Getty collaboration aims to address these concerns head-on, providing a safe and reliable way for creators to access high-quality content for use in their projects. By partnering with Getty Images, PicsArt is demonstrating its commitment to responsible innovation and its determination to provide creators with the tools and resources they need to bring their visions to life.

In the end, the partnership between Getty Images and PicsArt marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the generative AI industry. As the platform continues to evolve and improve, it will be exciting to see the kinds of creative content that emerge from this collaboration. With its commitment to commercial safety and responsible innovation, PicsArt is poised to become a leader in the generative AI space for years to come.
