Epic Games has launched the Epic Games Store (EGS) on mobile devices, with availability on iPhones in the European Union and Android devices worldwide. This move represents a significant effort by Epic to challenge the current digital marketplace, which has been dominated by Apple and Google. The introduction of EGS on these platforms is part of Epic’s broader strategy to create a more competitive and open digital environment.
The launch includes three key multiplayer games: Fortnite, Rocket League Sideswipe, and a new mobile-optimized version of Fall Guys. While Android users around the globe can access these games through the Epic Games Store immediately, the iPhone version is currently restricted to the EU. This limitation is due to the regulatory support provided by the Digital Markets Act, which is only enforceable within the European Union.
The Digital Markets Act has played a crucial role in facilitating Epic’s entry into the iOS market by promoting competition and innovation. However, since this regulation only applies in the EU, it does not yet impact other regions, leaving Epic’s iOS expansion confined to this area for now.
Tim Sweeney, Epic Games founder and CEO, has voiced strong support for this development, describing it as a meaningful step towards breaking the existing duopoly held by Apple and Google. Sweeney believes that this launch marks tangible progress in enhancing competition and choice for developers and consumers, though he acknowledges that there is still much work to be done.
Despite this achievement, accessing the Epic Games Store on mobile devices is not without challenges. Users face complex installation procedures and intimidating security warnings imposed by Apple and Google, which may deter less tech-savvy individuals.
Epic Games is aware of these barriers and continues to fight against restrictive practices while expanding its presence through third-party app stores like AltStore PAL and other independent platforms, aiming to further broaden access and influence in the mobile gaming market.
