The upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series, titled Crystal Lake, has appointed Brad Caleb Kane as its new showrunner, creator, and executive producer. This change comes after Bryan Fuller exited the project due to creative differences. A24, the production studio behind the series, is taking the show in a new direction with Kane at the helm, and it will be streaming on Peacock.
Kane expressed his excitement for the project, revealing that his passion for horror began in childhood, heavily influenced by the Friday the 13th films. He shared that he is thrilled to be contributing to the franchise that helped shape his creative path, especially with partners like A24 and Peacock supporting the new chapter in this legendary horror universe.
Brad Caleb Kane brings significant experience to Crystal Lake, having worked on shows such as Tokyo Vice, Lodge 49, and Warrior. He also served as co-showrunner and executive producer for HBO’s upcoming It prequel, Welcome to Derry. His expertise in suspenseful and dark storytelling positions him well to lead the series, which will explore deeper aspects of the Jason Voorhees story.
Although specific plot details for Crystal Lake are still under wraps, the show will draw inspiration from the original Friday the 13th movie. That film followed camp counselors who were terrorized and killed by Mrs. Voorhees, seeking revenge for the presumed drowning of her son, Jason. Though Jason only appeared briefly at the end of the first movie, he went on to become the central villain in the subsequent films, famously donning his hockey mask.
In addition to Kane, several other key figures will be involved as executive producers, including Victor Miller, the original screenwriter of Friday the 13th, as well as Marc Toberoff, Robert M. Barsamian, Robert P. Barsamian, and A24. With this strong team in place, the prequel series is generating considerable anticipation as it promises to further expand the iconic Friday the 13th legacy.
