The latest conflict between Spotify and Apple revolves around volume control capabilities. Spotify claims that Apple has discontinued the technology that allowed users to adjust volume using the physical buttons on iOS devices when connected via Spotify Connect. As a result, iOS users must now use the volume slider within the Spotify app for these adjustments, although this issue doesn’t affect Bluetooth, AirPlay connections, or Android users. Spotify is working on a solution but, for now, users must adapt to this change.

Spotify Connect is a feature that allows users to control playback on various devices directly from the Spotify app, making it convenient to switch between speakers, TVs, and other connected devices. Previously, users could adjust the volume using the physical buttons on their iPhone, but this is no longer possible due to Apple’s recent changes. While this functionality still works with Apple TV and HomePod, Apple has informed Spotify that integration with HomePod is necessary to restore this feature on iOS.

This lack of direct integration with HomePod has been an ongoing issue for Spotify. Since the launch of the first HomePod in 2018, Spotify has not provided support, unlike other streaming services like Pandora and YouTube Music, which have added support in recent years. Apple’s decision has prompted Spotify to notify users within the app when they attempt to use the volume buttons, guiding them to the in-app volume slider instead. This temporary workaround is less convenient but necessary under the circumstances.

The issue also extends to Google Cast on iOS, as similar complaints were reported by Spotify users earlier this year. This indicates that the problem may not be isolated to Apple’s recent changes but could be part of broader interoperability challenges across different platforms. Despite the inconvenience, Spotify assures users that it is actively working on resolving the issue, though no specific timeline has been provided.

Spotify has criticized Apple, accusing it of violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to prevent tech giants from engaging in unfair practices. Spotify’s frustrations with Apple are part of a larger pattern of disputes, including a €1.8 billion fine imposed on Apple by the EU in March for restricting competition on the App Store. The ongoing tension between the two companies underscores the broader challenges in ensuring fair competition and interoperability in the digital market.
