The second planned expansion for Alan Wake 2, titled The Lake House, is set to release on October 22, 2024, and promises to amplify the game’s terrifying atmosphere. This DLC introduces a new playable character and a new setting that will feel familiar to players of the base game.

The expansion is centered around a mysterious FBC research station known as the Lake House, located on Cauldron Lake, which has been a focal point in the Alan Wake series. Events in the DLC tie directly into the main storyline, expanding on what transpired at the Lake House prior to the main game’s later acts.

The first gameplay for The Lake House DLC was showcased during the October 2024 Xbox Partner Preview, offering a deeper look into the setting and storyline. The expansion features Agent Estevez as the new playable character, who was previously seen in Alan Wake 2 but now takes center stage.

Estevez lacks supernatural abilities, but players will have access to a new weapon designed specifically for her by the FBC. This gameplay setup mirrors the mechanics of the base game, maintaining continuity in how the character interacts with the world.

Unlike Alan Wake 2, which balanced various tones, The Lake House DLC leans heavily into horror. Remedy Entertainment has described the DLC as having a more intense and frightening atmosphere, similar to the eerie sections in the Valhalla Nursing Home from the base game.

Players will face a new enemy type called the Painted, who emerge from murals, adding to the unsettling environment. This emphasis on horror aims to deliver a more terrifying experience than the main game.

Another notable aspect of the DLC is its connection to Control, another game in the Remedy Connected Universe. The Lake House further intertwines the worlds of Alan Wake 2 and Control, especially with the FBC outpost serving as a key location.

The gameplay trailer hints at the return of Dylan Faden, a major antagonist from Control, adding even more depth to the crossover between these two franchises. These connections suggest that The Lake House will play a significant role in expanding the shared universe Remedy is building.

For those interested in The Lake House expansion, it will be available as part of the Alan Wake 2 Deluxe Edition, which costs $80 and includes both the base game and the previous Night Springs expansion.

Night Springs offered a different, surreal take with more light-hearted, imaginative scenarios, making The Lake House a stark contrast with its darker and more horror-focused content. Fans of the series can expect a thrilling continuation of Alan Wake’s story alongside deeper ties to Control.
