Instagram Tests Private Dislike Button to Improve Comment Moderation and User Experience

Instagram has begun testing a new button that allows users to privately express dissatisfaction with comments on posts. Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, announced on Threads that the button is designed to provide a discreet way for users to indicate that a comment makes them uncomfortable. A screenshot shared by a Threads user shows the button as a downward-facing arrow next to the like button on comments.

Unlike traditional dislike buttons, this new feature does not display a public count. Mosseri clarified that pressing the button will remain entirely private, meaning no one will see how many users have disliked a comment. However, Instagram may eventually use this data to adjust comment rankings, potentially pushing disliked comments lower in the thread to encourage a more positive discussion environment.

Instagram spokesperson Christine Pai emphasized that this feature is part of the platform’s broader efforts to give users more control over their experience. Initially, the test will be limited to a small group of users, focusing on comments under Reels and Feed posts. The goal is to provide users with a way to manage their interactions and content exposure more effectively.

Although still in its testing phase, the private dislike button could lead to further refinements in Instagram’s content moderation approach. If successful, Instagram may expand the feature and integrate it more deeply into its ranking system to create a friendlier and more engaging comment section. This move aligns with Instagram’s ongoing efforts to promote a safer and more enjoyable user experience.
