International Harvester, once a prominent name in North America, is set to make a comeback through its new brand, Scout Motors, now under the Volkswagen umbrella. This revival is marked by the introduction of two electric vehicle (EV) models: the Terra pickup and the Traveler SUV.
Both vehicles are built on a brand-new EV platform and are expected to launch in 2027, with starting prices below $60,000 before any incentives. This initiative taps into the legacy of the original Scout, which was produced from 1961 to 1980 and remains a beloved figure in automotive history.
The design philosophy behind the new models aims to honor the spirit of the classic Scout while incorporating modern aesthetics. Scout Motors has introduced rounded contours and distinctive “black masks” on the front and rear fascias, paying homage to their predecessors.
Other design features, such as separate bumpers and upward-sweeping side windows, further reflect the vintage design while blending seamlessly with contemporary elements like thin LED strips and rectangular headlights. Although the prototypes showcased are not final, they are reportedly 85% representative of what consumers can expect in the production models.
The Terra and Traveler are engineered with a rugged construction, akin to their predecessors. They boast a body-on-frame design with solid rear axles, ensuring durability for off-road enthusiasts. Both models will offer substantial utility, featuring a payload capacity of 2,000 pounds and impressive towing capabilities—7,000 pounds for the Traveler and 10,000 pounds for the Terra.
The introduction of all-wheel drive via front and rear electric motors further enhances their off-road capabilities, appealing to buyers with active lifestyles.
Performance-wise, the new Scout models promise rapid acceleration, going from 0 to 60 MPH in just 3.5 seconds, thanks to an estimated 1,000 pound-feet of torque. The base trim will provide a range of up to 350 miles, while an extended range variant will utilize a gas-powered range extender for up to 500 miles.
Although specific charging times are not detailed, the vehicles will incorporate an 800-volt architecture that supports fast charging capabilities, along with advanced features such as bidirectional charging and over-the-air updates.
In stark contrast to the original Scout’s minimalist interiors, the new models feature luxurious and high-tech cabins equipped with digital displays and an intuitive infotainment system. Comfort and functionality are prioritized, with seating options that include a front bench seat and various storage solutions.
Both vehicles will be sold directly to consumers, eliminating the dealership middleman and promising a straightforward purchasing experience. Designed and engineered in Michigan, the Scout models will be produced at a new facility in Columbia, South Carolina, creating approximately 4,000 jobs and positioning Scout Motors for a bright future in the EV market.
