Universal Pictures is continuing its push into video game adaptations, this time with Sega’s classic arcade racer OutRun. Following the massive success of Five Nights at Freddy’s and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the studio is eyeing OutRun as its next big project. The 1986 driving game is a nostalgic favorite and a milestone in gaming history, known for its fast-paced action and vibrant, sun-drenched aesthetic.
From Arcade Legend to Hollywood: OutRun Gears Up with Star-Studded Team
First released in arcades in 1986, OutRun quickly became a sensation thanks to its unique gameplay, branching paths, and the ability to choose your own music. It topped arcade sales in 1987 and stood as Sega’s most successful arcade cabinet of the decade. The game’s legacy has endured through several sequels and remasters, including a version for the Nintendo Switch, which is currently discounted.

According to Deadline, OutRun will be helmed by director Michael Bay, known for explosive blockbusters, alongside producer Brad Fuller under their Platinum Dunes banner. Sydney Sweeney, best known for her roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus, is also attached as a producer, though she has no confirmed acting role at this time. The script is being penned by Jayson Rothwell, with Sega’s Toru Nakahara also on board as a producer.
Creative Freedom and High Stakes Define OutRun’s Leap from Arcade to Big Screen
Given that the original OutRun game focused more on arcade action than narrative depth, the movie has a largely blank slate in terms of plot. Fans are hoping to see the iconic red Ferrari Testarossa convertible front and center. The lack of an established storyline gives the filmmakers creative freedom, though it also places more pressure on the team to build a compelling narrative from scratch.
Movie adaptations of racing games have seen varied success. Need for Speed (2014) struggled critically, while Gran Turismo (2023) received a warmer reception. Meanwhile, the Twisted Metal series on Peacock found enough traction to earn a second season. Whether OutRun will follow in the footsteps of box office winners or stall out remains to be seen, but the high-profile names attached suggest a strong effort is underway.
