NASA Prepares for Exciting Spacewalk to Install Upgraded Solar Array on ISS

NASA has made significant progress in its quest to return humans to the moon with the arrival of three all-electric, zero-emission crew transportation vehicles at its Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This technological shift marks a historic milestone for the space agency, as it gos on a journey towards environmental sustainability. The specially designed vehicles, developed by California-based EV startup Canoo Technologies, will replace the traditional “Astrovans” used during NASA’s Apollo and Space Shuttle programs.

These futuristic rides are designed to shuttle astronauts to Launch Complex 39B for Artemis missions, including the upcoming Artemis II, set to carry four astronauts on a fly-by of the moon in November 2024. According to NASA’s Artemis launch director, Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, the focus was on ensuring the crew’s safety and comfort during the transport to the pad. The new vehicles will also transport personnel, such as spacesuit technicians, and specialized equipment needed for the lunar missions.

Over the next year, the fleet will be used for astronaut training exercises, ultimately playing a major role in transporting astronauts to the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft for the first crewed lunar flight in five decades. The successful Artemis II mission will pave the way for the first crewed lunar landing since 1973 and set NASA on course to building a permanent astronaut base on the moon. With plans to use the site as a launchpad for the first human mission to Mars, the journey from Earth-based EVs to Mars landers will be a significant one.
