In a recent interview with Dartmouth Engineering, OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati provided insight into the upcoming advancements of ChatGPT, specifically GPT-5. According to Murati, the jump from GPT-4 to GPT-5 is equivalent to someone growing from a high-schooler to a university-level intellect. This significant leap in intelligence is expected to arrive in approximately a year and a half, which may come as a disappointment to those eagerly awaiting the release, considering previous rumors suggested GPT-5 would debut much sooner.

To put this development into perspective, Murati likens the trajectory of improvement in AI systems. GPT-3, the third generation of ChatGPT, represents toddler-level intelligence, while GPT-4 is more akin to a smart high schooler. In contrast, the next iteration, GPT-5, is anticipated to possess PhD-level intelligence for specific tasks. This notion is in line with statements made by Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott, who claims that the next-gen AI systems will be capable of passing PhD exams due to improved memory and reasoning operations.

However, it’s essential to note that Murati clarifies that the “PhD-level” intelligence only applies to some tasks. These systems are already human-level in certain areas, but in many cases, they still lag behind human capabilities. This nuance highlights the complexities of AI development and the need for a more comprehensive understanding of its limitations.

The interview also touches on the timeline for GPT-5’s release, with Murati estimating it will arrive in a year and a half. This represents a significant delay from earlier rumors suggesting a late 2023 or summer 2024 launch. Despite this setback, the promise of GPT-5’s capabilities continues to generate excitement and anticipation within the tech community.

The next evolution of ChatGPT has the potential to revolutionize various industries, from education to healthcare. As AI systems continue to improve, they will have a profound impact on society, transforming the way we live, work, and interact with one another. The advancements being made in AI research have far-reaching implications, and the wait for GPT-5 will likely be met with great enthusiasm and expectation.
