NASA's Starliner Spacecraft Faces Delays and Setbacks Before Maiden Crewed Flight

After a series of delays and launch postponements, Boeing Space’s Starliner spacecraft finally transported its first crew to orbit on Wednesday, June 6. The spacecraft, carrying NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center on a ULA Atlas V rocket at 10:52 a.m. ET. This marks the third time the Starliner has flown to space, but the first flight with a crew aboard.

The successful liftoff comes as a big relief to everyone involved, particularly Wilmore and Williams, who had already experienced two countdown halts due to technical issues. The most recent of these occurred just two weeks prior, when the launch was scrubbed with just 3 minutes and 50 seconds remaining before the rocket was set to fire up its engines.

The Starliner’s previous flights were beset by issues, including a failure to reach the correct orbit during its first flight in 2019. This led to a long list of software issues that had to be resolved before the spacecraft could fly again. The second flight, which took place in 2022, successfully docked with the International Space Station (ISS), paving the way for the first crewed test.

During the current mission, the Starliner will spend about a week aboard the ISS before returning home in the southwestern United States for a parachute-assisted touchdown. The spacecraft is expected to function as expected during this mission, allowing NASA to use the Starliner for future astronaut flights to and from the space station.
