Google is reportedly working on a new device that appears to be a significant departure from its previous Chromecast with Google TV offerings. The latest rumors suggest that the new device, tentatively referred to as the “Google TV Streamer”, has a wireless charging pad-like design that seems to be a departure from the traditional set-top box format.
One of the first things that catches the eye is the device’s design, which is thicker than expected, possibly to accommodate new internal components or technologies. The unit has two cables running from the back, which are likely meant for power and HDMI connections. Interestingly, there is no sign of an Ethernet port, which could be a surprising omission considering the need for reliable internet connectivity in modern streaming devices.
The accompanying remote control looks unassuming, with a gray home button that replaces the previous Google Assistant logo. The remote also sports branded buttons for YouTube and Netflix, which is no surprise given the importance of these streaming services in the modern TV terrain. The power button and a star button, which likely serves a similar function as the Onn 4K Pro device, round out the control.
The new remote control design is also worth noting, as it seems to have abandoned the funky Google Assistant logo in favor of a more standard microphone icon. This change could be a nod to the growing importance of voice control in modern TV streaming.
Google’s New Streamer Device
