Google Expands Auracast Support, Bringing Enhanced Bluetooth Audio to More Android Devices

Bluetooth Auracast is a breakthrough technology that enables devices like smartphones, TVs, and public announcement systems to broadcast audio to an unlimited number of receivers, including hearing aids and earbuds. This innovation allows users to connect seamlessly to audio streams via Bluetooth, enhancing accessibility and convenience. Google has now introduced Auracast support for Android, enabling users with compatible devices to access this feature and improve their listening experience.

Auracast Improves Accessibility and Everyday Audio Experiences for All Users

Google’s recent announcement highlights the growing importance of Auracast, particularly for individuals with hearing impairments. The technology enables them to connect to lectures, public broadcasts, and live events with ease. Currently, Auracast is supported on select hearing aids from GN Hearing, Starkey, and Jabra. Additionally, Samsung Galaxy smartphones running One UI 7 or Android 15, along with Google Pixel 9 devices running Android 16 beta, are among the first to be Auracast-compatible.

While Auracast offers significant benefits for those with hearing impairments, its applications extend to everyday scenarios as well. For instance, in a crowded sports bar where the TV is muted, users can connect their Auracast-enabled smartphones and earbuds to listen to the game’s audio privately. Google has also made it possible to apply hearing aid presets to Auracast streams, ensuring a personalized and enhanced listening experience for all users.

Enhancing Connectivity and Expanding Auracast Adoption Across Devices and Public Venues

To improve usability, Google is working toward making Auracast connections even more seamless. The Google Pixel 9 series will introduce QR code scanning, allowing users to connect to Auracast broadcasts effortlessly. Additionally, an increasing number of Bluetooth-enabled devices, including Sony WF-1000XM5 earbuds, Google Pixel Buds Pro 2, JBL Charge 6 speakers, and Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, are joining the list of Auracast-compatible products, making the feature more accessible to a broader audience.

Currently, Samsung and Google are leading the adoption of Auracast in the US, while Xiaomi has also integrated the technology into its latest smartphones. For Auracast to reach its full potential, more manufacturers of smartphones, tablets, earbuds, and Bluetooth speakers need to collaborate with the Bluetooth SIG, the organization overseeing Bluetooth standardization. While Auracast has been in development since 2022, its widespread adoption now depends on public venues like theaters, restaurants, and airports embracing the technology to create a more inclusive audio experience.
