An unprecedented case of industrial espionage has come to light as a former Samsung executive is accused of stealing trade secrets from the Korean tech giant to recreate an exact copy of its semiconductor plant in China. The executive, 65 years old, allegedly pilfered crucial information between 2018 and 2019, using it to establish a rival company just a mile away from the original Samsung plant in Xian, China.
Prosecutors in South Korea have indicted the executive, as well as six others, for their alleged roles in the scheme. According to the Korea Times, the executive had told his new employees, many of whom were former Samsung and SK Hynix employees, to obtain and utilize Samsung’s semiconductor design data and other trade secrets. The construction of the replica plant was reportedly financed by a Taiwanese company, which failed to follow through on its promised 8 trillion won (approximately $6.2 billion) investment. Undeterred, the project went forward with an investment of 460 billion won (around $360 million) from interested parties in China.
The replica plant is said to have produced trial chips at a different location, allegedly relying on the stolen knowledge of Samsung technology. The construction of the plant, staffed by around 200 former Samsung employees, has caused significant damage to Samsung’s business, with estimated losses of at least 300 billion won (approximately $235 million).
