As NASA prepares to send humans back to the moon by 2024, the agency is busy constructing three Orion spacecraft at the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building in Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The trio of spacecraft is at various stages of production, with the heat shield for the Artemis II mission being installed. The Apollo heritage-inspired Orion spacecraft, designed by Lockheed Martin, is a critical component of the Artemis mission, capable of carrying astronauts to the moon and back, with its crew module serving as the primary living quarters during the mission.

In Artemis III, the Orion spacecraft will carry the astronauts to lunar orbit, where they will transfer to a modified version of SpaceX’s Starship lander. The mission is tentatively set for 2025, subject to SpaceX’s progress with testing its Super Heavy and Starship vehicle. Artemis IV, the final mission in the series, is planned for 2028 and will also see astronauts set foot on the lunar surface.
