Revealed at the 1962 Paris Motor Show, the GT Berlinetta Lusso quickly earned acclaim as one of the most beautiful cars ever made. This vehicle marked Ferrari’s move toward enhanced luxury and refinement. Named “Lusso,” meaning “Luxury” in Italian, it was a product of Pininfarina’s renowned design and Carrozzeria Scaglietti’s expert craftsmanship.
The grand tourer symbolized the pinnacle of the 250 GT series, closely related in style to the 250 GTO. Its architecture included a tubular steel chassis, a front suspension with double wishbones and coil springs, and a rear setup echoing the 250 GTO with a live axle and telescopic shock absorbers.
The Lusso’s body was constructed from steel with aluminum panels, and its 3-liter V12 engine, delivering 240 horsepower, propelled it to speeds of 150 mph, making it the fastest passenger car of its era.
Set to be auctioned on June 1 with an estimated price of $1,500,000 to $1,800,000, this remarkable vehicle is renowned for its luxurious interior, which features leather upholstery, a three-spoke Nardi steering wheel, and generous trunk space.
Over an 18-month production run, only 351 units were made, with some owned by notable figures such as Steve McQueen and Eric Clapton. A particularly distinguished model, chassis 5381, was initially delivered to Italy and subsequently owned by racing driver Eppie Wietzes.
This car, which has changed hands several times, underwent significant restorations by the Legendary Motorcar Company and Alfieri International Automobiles. Currently sporting a maroon finish, it has participated in numerous events, earning accolades at the FCA National Meeting and Concours d’Elegance.
