Joining the electric car movement, McLaren is gearing up to launch its own EV, but unlike Ferrari’s 2025 target, McLaren faces roadblocks.

According to CEO Michael Leiters, the company seeks increased investment in the UK’s automotive supply chain, particularly for high-performance batteries that avoid import taxes. These batteries are essential for McLaren’s upcoming hybrids, suggesting a potential electrified successor to the 750S.

While McLaren’s Artura hybrid uses BMW batteries, the company is also exploring BMW’s platform for its first SUV. Despite these partnerships, McLaren’s fully electric car is in the early engineering phase, indicating a wait for a zero-emission McLaren.

The company isn’t fully convinced by current battery technology, as limitations conflict with McLaren’s focus on performance and driving dynamics.

Focusing on agility over brute force, McLaren isn’t interested in electric supercars that tip the scales at over two tons. To them, a true supercar should be “nimble on the street” and deliver a driving experience that sets them apart from the competition.

This commitment to lightweight engineering and performance extends to production as well. Unlike some larger manufacturers, McLaren intends to keep electric supercar production in-house, ensuring they retain control over quality and craftsmanship.

This focus on performance and exclusivity aligns with their prediction that hybrids will dominate their sales by 2030, suggesting a farewell to gasoline-only models like the 750S. With Ferrari already offering a compelling hybrid option in the SF90, McLaren will face stiff competition in the emerging electric supercar market.
