Casio has begun taking preorders for its new robotic pet, Moflin, which resembles a combination of a hamster and the furry Tribbles from *Star Trek*. Unlike Sony’s Aibo, which is designed for active interaction and movement, Moflin’s primary function is to be cuddled and held.

Casio promises that over time, Moflin will learn to recognize its owner, building a simulated bond expressed through distinctive sounds and movements. The focus is on providing comfort and companionship rather than entertainment or play.

Initially developed in collaboration with the Japanese startup Vanguard Industries, Moflin is now produced and distributed by Casio. Available for around $398 USD (¥59,400), the robotic pet is set to launch on November 7th.

Casio also offers a yearly subscription service called Club Moflin, priced at about $44 USD (¥6,600), which provides benefits like discounted repairs, cleaning services, and even complete fur replacements. This service aims to help owners maintain Moflin’s soft, lifelike appearance.

While Moflin’s movements are relatively limited, the robot is designed to offer emotional support, similar to products like the Qoobo robotic cat. The small bot mimics snuggling behaviors by moving its head and body in response to being held.

Alongside these physical interactions, Moflin uses AI technology to recognize and respond to its owner’s voice and touch, creating a sense of familiarity. Over time, Moflin responds with unique sounds and movements specific to the person it interacts with most, simulating a personal bond.

The robot is also programmed to develop its own simulated personality and emotional states based on how it’s treated. Regular interaction leads to a calm and happy Moflin, while neglect may result in stress or sadness.

However, the robot doesn’t display these emotions visibly; they can only be tracked through an app. The app also allows users to control the volume of Moflin’s sounds. In many ways, this feature echoes the experience of owning a Tamagotchi, though Moflin lacks any form of digital rewards or incentives.

To enhance the experience of owning a “living” creature, Moflin comes with a small charging bed instead of a standard USB cable, making it appear to sleep while recharging. Casio estimates that Moflin’s battery will last around five hours on a full charge, with a recharge time of approximately three and a half hours.

This design emphasizes Moflin’s role as an emotional support companion rather than just a tech gadget, further blurring the line between technology and lifelike pet substitutes.
