Technology Giant Dyson Brings Affordable Luxury to Headphones

Dyson, the company famous for its innovative vacuum cleaners and air purifiers, has ventured into the world of headphones with its new wireless, noise-canceling OnTrac headphones. Building on the success of its air-purifying Zone headphones, which received mixed reviews due to its unique air induction system, the OnTrac aims to offer a more stylized and affordable alternative. Initially, the device will be available in four different aluminum-based color themes, including CNC aluminum, copper, and nickel, as well as a ceramic-based option called Ceramic Cinnabar. Additionally, users can customize their headphones further by replacing the ear caps and ear cushions with a variety of colors, resulting in over 2,000 possible combinations.

The OnTrac boasts impressive sound quality, with 40mm drivers that can reproduce frequencies from 6Hz to 21kHz. The drivers are also tilted at 13 degrees towards the ear, allowing for a more immersive listening experience. As with the Zone, the OnTrac features active noise cancellation, which Dyson claims is best-in-class, capable of reducing ambient noise by 40 decibels. The headphones also include real-time sound tracking within the MyDyson companion app, which warns users of potentially harmful sound levels and allows for customization of the sound through three EQ presets.

Despite its impressive features, the OnTrac has some drawbacks. For instance, it is only compatible with SBC, AAC, and LHDC Bluetooth codecs, limiting its ability to stream high-quality audio. Furthermore, the proprietary 3.5mm-to-USB-C cable required for analog audio playback adds to the overall cost. On the other hand, the OnTrac’s USB-C charging port can be used for both lossless digital audio and analog audio, making it a versatile option for users.

In terms of controls, the OnTrac features a small joystick-style knob on the rear of the right earcup for volume, playback, and call management, as well as touch sensors on the outer earcups for ANC control. Wear sensors are also available, allowing users to enable auto-pause/play. The rechargeable battery promises up to 55 hours of operation with ANC enabled, with quick-charge capabilities offering additional power boosts.

The OnTrac’s affordable price point of $500, half the cost of the original Zone headphones, makes it an attractive option for those seeking high-quality wireless, noise-canceling headphones without breaking the bank. However, potential buyers should weigh the pros and cons, considering the limited Bluetooth codec options and proprietary cable requirements. The OnTrac represents a significant step forward for Dyson in audio technology, and its unique color customization options and impressive sound quality make it an exciting new entrant in the market.
