MSI is in charge of bringing CAMM2 memory technology into desktop systems, aiming to revolutionize the way memory is installed and managed. Earlier this year, they showcased a Project Zero series motherboard featuring a single CAMM2 module instead of the traditional DDR5 memory slots. In a more recent update, MSI provided deeper insights into this technology, which has the potential to change how memory functions in desktops.

The CAMM memory module, initially developed by Dell’s engineer Tom Schnell for their Precision 7670 workstation laptop, was created to address space constraints in laptops while also improving performance by shortening the trace lengths to the CPU. CAMM2, the improved version, has been recognized as an official standard by JEDEC, the organization responsible for memory standards in the computing industry.

MSI highlighted the benefits of CAMM2 during a live stream event, where their representatives showcased a desktop system equipped with this new memory module.

One of the key advantages discussed was the improved space around the CPU socket, which could facilitate the use of larger coolers and enhance airflow around the CPU. This feature could be particularly beneficial for high-performance desktops, where cooling is a critical factor.

However, the shift to CAMM2 also brings some challenges. For example, MSI had to relocate the 24-pin ATX power connector to the top of the motherboard, which may complicate cable management. Fortunately, for Project Zero motherboards that move connectors to the back of the board, this issue might be less pronounced, allowing for a cleaner overall design.

Although CAMM2 shows great potential, it’s still in its infancy. The modules are expensive, hard to find, and incompatible with most current systems. Moreover, replacing CAMM2 modules requires more effort due to their mounting screws. While desktop users don’t need to worry about CAMM2 immediately, the technology could offer significant improvements in the future if it is successfully implemented on a larger scale.
